  • Course Level – Undergraduate
  • Duration – 3 years + 1 year Internship
B.Sc. Cardio Pulmonary Perfusion Care is an Undergraduate Program offered by Adithya Institute of Health Science. If cardiology pulls at your heartstrings or the idea of being a cardiovascular technologist raises your pulse, then this is your calling. Cardiovascular Perfusion is the science of providing extracorporeal circulation in order to artificially support and temporarily replace a patient’s respiratory and circulatory systems. The course essentially involves an advanced study of the heart’s physiology, pathology, and associated equipment used to support, or assume the function of the heart or lungs during medical procedures. Clinical Perfusionists are expert members of the cardiac surgical team. The perfusionist manages the physiological and metabolic demands of the patient while the cardiac surgeon operates on the heart. They provide lifesaving support to patients requiring extra corporeal circulation, including but not limited to major cardiothoracic, vascular and transplant surgeries, as well as support for critically-ill patients. Cardiovascular Perfusionists are important members of the open-heart surgical team. Cardiac Technologists also assist physicians during invasive cardiovascular testing. Perfusionists work alongside surgeons, nurses and OTTs. Perfusion Technologists prepare and operate heart-lung machines and other sophisticated equipment as directed by healthcare physicians. A perfusionist may also find their responsibilities extending to areas such as the cardiovascular intensive care unit and catheterization laboratory.

Perfusionists essentially work in operating rooms in hospitals and surgical centres during heart and lung surgery, and in ICUs. With advanced education, perfusionists can go in for teaching, instructing and leading research and working for perfusion equipment suppliers as Sales and Marketing Executives for perfusion products aside from roles requiring active medical involvement. Perfusionists are also key personnel in placing and managing patients on ventricular assistance during heart, lung or liver transplants.
